How long does it take to get U.S. citizenship in California?

Pat Malone • December 13, 2021

Are you from California? Learn more about long it takes to get citizenship below.

Getting citizenship takes a while, depending on where you live. After USCIS receives your application, the process can take 6 months to 2 years, or longer. It includes waiting for:

  • a receipt and notice from USCIS,
  • a biometrics (fingerprinting) appointment,
  • the interview and test at USCIS, and
  • a naturalization ceremony, to take the oath.

To see how long the process takes in your area, check USCIS Processing Times. Under “Form,” scroll down and click "N-400." Under “Field Office,” pick the office near you.

Can I check on my application?

Yes, you can check on the progress of your citizenship application. After you send the application to the USCIS, they will mail you a notice. The notice says they received your application, and gives you a Receipt Number. Use the Receipt Number to check your USCIS Case Status Online.

COVID-19 Note: The pandemic has delayed everything. Many offices closed. Interviews and oath ceremonies were postponed or canceled. USCIS is taking longer to review applications, and schedule appointments and ceremonies.
