How much does it cost to apply for U.S. citizenship in California?

Pat Malone • December 13, 2021

Are you from California? Learn more about how much it costs to apply for citizenship below.

USCIS (the government) charges a fee to apply for citizenship.

On April 1, 2024, USCIS increased the fees for many immigration applications, including citizenship.

For most people submitting their paper form by mail, the fee is now $760.

Applicants can also file online with USCIS and pay $710. To file online, applicants must create an account and complete their form on the USCIS website

Citizenshipworks does not file your application for you to USCIS.

What if I can't afford the fee?

You may ask USCIS for a full or reduced fee waiver. If USCIS approves your:

  • full fee waiver (Form I-912), you pay $0.
  • reduced fee waiver (included in the Form N-400), you pay $380.

Use this Fee Calculator from the New Americans Campaign to see if you qualify for a full or reduced fee waiver. The full fee waiver is for people whose income is less than 150% of the poverty level. The reduced fee waiver is for people whose income is between 150% and 400% of the poverty level.  The Fee Calculator tells you which form to use.

You can pay the citizenship application fee by:

  • check,
  • money order, or
  • credit card.
